Why not make this the year you form a connection with that leader you admire, the author you love, the company you want to work for…and do so in a way that will develop a genuine connection.
I have done this over the years and have met some of my favorite authors, leaders I held in high regard, and even organizations I respected.
This type of initiative only works if it is sustainable and fun. So, approach the below with that attitude as you identify and build Your Dream 5.
Below is an outline of my basic strategy when building my Dream 5 Connections.
1. Make a list of 5 people or organizations you would like to connect with. These can be people who would help advance your career or business, your favorite author, or an organization you would like to become a part of. Don’t be concerned with the “how” at this point. Just focus on who you would like to meet.
2. Do some research on those you have chosen to connect with this year. Get to know them and what’s important to them. So, when you connect, you can do so in a way that is meaningful to them. Go to their online profiles and see what they are posting:
a. What are they talking about or focusing on?
b. Who have they aligned themselves with?
c. Who are they following?
d. Do they talk about the same things on their other platforms or is one personal and another business?
e. This will tell you where to connect with them and what to say where.
3. Calendar time:
a. Initially, set aside 15 minutes three days a week to connect with your list.
b. Start with two people, then work up to your complete list. Consistency and sustainability are key to following through and the success of your overall goal.
c. When you begin a connection, do not contact them directly if you have never interacted with them before.
d. Leave a comment on something they have written. (Because of the research you have done, you will be able to comment on topics that are truly meaningful to them.) Even referencing a previous article they wrote, a comment they made, or a resource you may have that speaks directly to what they are referencing.
e. Following these steps will help you create a lasting connection rather than a transactional connection.
4. Impact:
a. The first time they see your name, they will think: “Oh nice, someone new commented.”
b. The second, third, or fourth time, there will be a slight recognition of your name.
c. If you continue to do this consistently, they will begin looking for your comments shortly after that.
d. After some interaction between the two of you, you can move to direct messaging (DM) them with questions and resources and meet them more formally.
If you choose to do this and move forward with this level of intentionality and consistency, you will have set yourself up for success in expanding your network.
I can’t wait to hear about your journey and the new relationships you have developed.
